So what you are actually seeing in this debate is the continuation of the dispute that had been running through British society since the Civil War, as to the divine right of kings

Which according to some religious scholars...Jesus wanted to do away with in biblical times. He preached heavily against the divine right of kings and want to abolish it completely.

Ironic really. Many Christian religious leaders and societies were in direct conflict with the teachings and views of the very God they were worshipping.
