Oh, I have it on good authority that Whedon's plot of possessed Cordy had zip to do with CC. He would have done that with anyone. He planned on doing the same thing with Doyle.
Whedon is a noir horror writer - he likes twisting characters inside out. Heck, look what he did to Willow and he loved Alyson Hannigan, or Wesley - his favorite actor is Alexis Denisof, or to Fred - another favorite Amy Acker.
No, Whedon wasn't that involved with CC or that upset with her. Remember he wasn't even really writing or producing for Angel most of the time - busy with Firefly. Plus CC's erratic behavior was nothing new to Whedon or that big a deal, this is a man who had to deal with Roseanne Barr for two years, and Donald Sutherland. I doubt he cared. He was focused on his story. Look at the comics - there's no actors involved and what he's doing to Angel is far worse than what he did with Cordelia. Or heck look at Dollhouse - and how dark he took those characters.
And Cordy's story as the Big Bad could have been brilliant. I can totally see her going down that road. It fit with the show. I actually liked it up to a point...if the actress had been better, pregnant or not, it could have been great. SMG would have sold that role - much as she sold the First Evil. Charisma wasn't smart enough to figure out that she'd have done more for her career and chances off Angel - if she had worked to sell it. She was unprofessional and it shows. Of course, I'm admittedly in the minority, my favorite seasons of Angel are S5 and S4, the first three seasons I found dull as all get out, with the exception of the Darla and Faith arcs. And S3 in my opinion is unwatchable in places, I actually gave up on it in S3 and it's the only season I don't own and don't plan to, (in particular the St. Cordelia and Baby Connor episodes).
