No, I haven't read the books. Now having seen the series...I don't know if I want to. I do have the first one on Kindle, but wasn't able to get into it. Didn't hold my interest for some reason or other. Most likely a mood thing.

I've no clue how close they are to the books. You definitely don't need to have read the books in order to follow it.
And according to the review, it veers away from the books in places. The review and comments are however based on the first two episodes, and the series gets a lot better by episode 7. I agree with the Slate reviewer regarding the first two episodes.
