I had the unfortunate experience of interacting with two old school fans, one here, and one on FB, who thought it would be better to end the series than have a female Doctor Who. One even stated that it would be better if they just did a spin off, with the female Time-Lord character who wasn't the Doctor. And they both had watched all the old Whos.
