From what I've read it's not going to address the original canon at all. What it appears to want to do is act as if the original didn't exist. And create a whole new canon -- ie. similar to BSG and the Star Trek "film" series reboot by Abrahams. Not a continuation like Next Generation or Force Awakens.

I'll be surprised if it gets picked up.
