Television Round Up

1. Sitcoms

Single Parents -- gave up within two minutes. A record.

Murphy Brown -- isolated moments of humor, but more topical than funny. It was always to be honest more topical and issue laden than funny.

The Good Place I laughed during it. But it annoyed me at various points. There are at least four cringe-inducing moments, which reminded me of my problem with American Comedy.

*If you are going to have Danson do a horrible fake Australian accent? Please don't have the alleged Australian characters do a horrible one too. The joke doesn't work. And you did it to death.

* The other joke they keep doing to death is the white trash jokes, in regards to Jason and Eleanor.
Stop. Please.

* And no more slapstick, you suck at it. (Eleanor gives a heartfelt speech to the group about how they should stay together, the group gently tells her why they feel it is time to move on and go their separate ways, she gets upset and lashes out at them and digs out her face from the cake. And I'm thinking, WTF? This is just jarring and gross and embarrassing and I fast-forwarded. Could not watch. Bleargh. Vomit worthy.]

* This moment results in another cringe-inducing and rather obvious bit. Eleanor darts off to hide in the bushes and eat the cake while waiting for an Uber. Humiliated and in pain. Simone finds her, and when Eleanor lashes out, gives her a little patronizing speech showing how advanced and mature Simone is.

And yes, let's use Simone, the new character to preach to us.

I'm sorry this wasn't believable. And it wasn't funny. Just sad and painful.

* The good?

Chidi upon arriving at Tahani's engagement party: So, this is come as you are for you people?
(he's looking at all the pretty people in their tuxedos and evening gowns.)
Eleanor: Wow, this is your airbnb?
Tahani: Oh, no. I can see your confusion. This is HEIRBnB, H-E-I-R, it's where heiresses and heirs trade mansions and chalets...
Tahani's fiancee: I'm sorry I haven't met you sooner. But I had to get up the courage, I was embarrassed because I'm just not that great.
Eleanor and Simon and Chidi: Have you seen yourself?
Eleanor: The perfect cheekbones and jaw...without an ounce of body fat.
Jason: And did Miley Cyrus write wrecking ball about Liam or Chris or Luke Helmsworth?
Fiancee Helmsworth: Don't remind me of how much better my acting family is then me -
Tahani: No, no...being a pedatric surgeon who does repairs children's spines is just as worthy as appearing in movies, I swear!

LOL!

Now that was brilliant.

All the Tahani jokes were spot on.

Tahani showing off her ring.
Eleanor: I'm surprised you can stand hauling that rock around.
Tahani: Oh we were taught at an early age how to handle that.

LOL!

Everything else I could have done without. But the Tahani bits were wonderful. Subtle, surprising and to the point. This show is best when it is subtle and allows the audience to think.

2. American Music Awards...

So, Taylor is interesting. I had to put close captioning on to figure out the lyrics to the opening song -- couldn't hear them over all the screaming and background noise.

Anyhow the opening number was interesting...entitled "I Did Something Bad". The lyrics are below the cut. She won the American Music Award for Best Album again. I don't tend to like her singing voice all that much, but her songs are interesting. Not sure if they will stand the test of time, though. They feel very topical.

I never trust a narcissist
But they love me
So I play 'em like a violin
And I make it look oh so easy
'Cause for every lie I tell them
They tell me three
This is how the world works
Now all he thinks about is me
I can feel the flames on my skin
Crimson red paint on my lips
If a man talks shit, then I owe him nothing
I don't regret it one bit, 'cause he had it coming

They say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good?
They say I did something bad
But why's it feel so good?
Most fun I ever had
And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could
It just felt so good, good

I never trust a playboy
But they love me
So I fly him all around the world
And I let them think they saved me
They never see it comin'
What I do next
This is how the world works
You gotta leave before you get left

I can feel the flames on my skin
He says, "Don't throw away a good thing"
But if he drops my name, then I owe him nothin'
And if he spends my change, then he had it comin'

They say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good?
They say I did something bad
But why's it feel so good?
Most fun I ever had
And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could
It just felt so good, good
It just felt so good

They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one
They got their pitchforks and proof
Their receipts and reasons
They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one

So light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)
Light me up, go ahead and light me up (light me up)
Light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)
Light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)

They say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good?
They say I did something bad
But why's it feel so good?
Most fun I ever had
And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could
It just felt so good, good

Oh, you say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good, good?
So bad, why's it feel so good?
Why's it feel, why's it feel so good? (Bad)
It just felt so good, good

Songwriters: Karl Johan Schuster / Max Martin / Taylor Swift

Can see why she won it, none of the other performers have grabbed my interest. They all sound alike. That's my difficulty with a lot of pop music - it tends to sound a like.

IT's also very politicized -- really pushing the vote. Also apparently some people have already voted. I don't know about you -- but I have four weeks to go.

3. Dramas...which I tend to prefer.

Manifest - still holding my attention. They are writing it smartly -- focusing on the characters and their relationships. Also centering the focus on the brother/sister team of Micheala and Ben. I was worried that they would explore a different passenger in each episode -- causing the show to become a bit defused. But I think they learned their lesson with the last three sci-fi shows they did.

It's actually the best of the new fall series to date.

9-1-1 -- in some respects better than last year. And certainly the most believable of the Emergency, Hospital, Firefighter series. Not to mention the most interesting and best cast.
It wisely focuses on the characters over the procedural elements, using the rescues to explore character issues and themes. This week it was being stuck. So we had someone rescued from an ATM machine, a tailpipe, and an escalator. They are certainly creative. And all three were believable.
(I've seen that happen.) This show is innovative in its interracial casting, and handling of homosexuality, disabilities, and interracial relations as if they weren't a bit deal. I point it out -- because it is a top-rated show that is diverse. This would have been unheard of five - ten years ago.

Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 -- both didn't quite work plot wise. And my attention kep wandering. Of the two, Station 19 was the most gripping. What is interesting about both series is that they are written by women, and focus on female surgeons and fire-fighters, traditionally male roles. Also feature hispanics, black men and women in positions of authority. They are also at the top of the ratings.

So we have two shows with female fire-fighters. In both, one of the women fire-fighters is a lesbian.
And both have diverse casts. Ten years ago, this wouldn't have been the case.

A Million Little Things -- eh. It's very whiny. Yeah, their friend committed suicide, but we basically have a lot of very wealthy thirty-somethings living in the suburbs of either Boston or Chicago, moping about life not being fair. And I'm thinking...seriously? The problem is I'm supposed to care about the guy who committed suicide, but he's annoying in flashbacks. Also, there's a reason his wife and one of his best friends were having an affair -- and really it's not anyone else's business but his wife, his best friend, his, and the best friend's wife. The other people really don't have a say in it.

I did like the conversation between the wife and the whiny friend who survived breast cancer.

Gary: Why? How could you do this to John? He did so much for me, for everyone.
Delia: That's just the thing. He was there for EVERYONE, and after a while, I just got forgotten.
Gary: But you were the perfect couple. You gave me hope. You had everything.
Delia: Until we weren't.

Me - frigging heck, Gary. No one has a perfect life. The couple that looks perfect and amazing, is actually in the most pain and on the verge of divorce.

I don't see this show lasting. I think it may piss folks off.
