Equire's Liste of 35 Most Anticipated films for 2019
65 of the Most Anticipated Movies via Rotten Tomatos
Biggest New Releases in 2019 according to Radio Times
Lots of sequels and reboots on this list. Making me wonder about Hollywood. Also best-selling book adaptations. Also, these a frigging lot of movies being released...I'll probably just see four of them in the theaters if that. (Captain Marvel, Vice, Dark Phoenix, and Avengers...)
A.
1. The Goldfinch (I wish they'd done Secret History, although this is admittedly easier and more popular).
Ansel Elgort, Sarah Paulson, Jeffrey Wright, and Nicole Kidman star in this adaptation of Donna Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a teenage boy whose life is changed after he survives a terrorist attack in New York City.
2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Release date: July 26
Quentin Tarantino's ninth film will be a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood in 1969 with some of IRL Hollywood's biggest players (the cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, James Marsden, and Al Pacino). And there's the terrifying backdrop: the Manson murders that shook the nation.
[Only Tarantino would cast Leonardo DiCaprio as a has-been actor living next door to Sharon Tate during the 1960s and 70s Manson murders and Brad Pitt as his stunt double. Apparently this film is supposed to be the closest in style to Pulp Fiction with a sprawling interconnected narrative.]
3. Rocketman
By the same director who stepped in after they kicked Singer off of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Release date: May 17
Dexter Fletcher joined the crew of this year's Bohemian Rhapsody when director Bryan Singer was fired from the production, but next year he gets sole directing credit on another biopic about a British pop icon: Elton John, as played by Taron Egerton. [My brother loved Bohemian Rhapsody, although he also love the original Hulk Movie and Titantic...so...]
4. >US by Jordan Peele
Release date: March 15
Jordan Peele's followup to the smash hit Get Out looks like another terrifying thriller. Starring an impressive cast that includes Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong'o, Elizabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker, it follows a family who are stalked and terrorized by a mysterious group of doppelgangers.
I just watched the trailer -- this thing is frighteningly trippy and creepy and has a lot to say. It may be the most innovative horror flick of the year.
5. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - Release Date October 18
It had to happen eventually. Someone made a biopic of Mr. Fred Rogers with Tom Hanks in the lead.
We knew it was only a matter of time.
6. Where'd You Go Bernadette -- YA book turned into a movie on March 22, 2019 by Richard Linklater
Stars Cate Blanchette (as Bernadette), with Laurence Fishburn, Billy Crudup, Judy Greer, and Kristin Wigg.
7. The Rosie Project
The Rosie Project (2019)
Directed by: N/A
Starring: Ryan Reynolds (rumored)
Opening on: May 10, 2019 (rumored)
Speaking of Ryan Reynolds, he’s also rumored to be attached to this romantic drama based on a novel by Australian writer Graeme Simsion. None of the cast or crew has been confirmed yet, and we don’t have any details on the plot, but the book centers on a straight-laced genetics professor who formulates criteria to find his perfect match, only to fall in love with a woman who doesn’t make the cut.
B. Best Superhero Flicks Adapted from Comic Books and Graphic Novels of 2019
[Remember when Feb - April were slow months...and all the big superhero flicks came out between Memorial Day and Labor Day? Well, we can thank Black Panther for changing all of that.)
1. Dark Phoenix - February 14, 2019 (Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender..) [Although depends on which site, radio times has a June release date.]
2. Hellboy Reboot - April 12, 2019
3. Shazam - April 2019 (this is basically DC's version of Spiderman - or Spiderman meets the Tom Hank's film "Big" starring Zachery Levi.)
4. Captain Marvel - March 2019 (Brie Lawson and Sam L. Jackson and Jude Law)
5. Avengers : Endgame - April 2019 (pretty much everyone...)
6. New Mutants - April 14 [Radio Times has an August release date.]
7. Glass - M Night Shalyman starring Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, Bruce Willis and Sarah Paulson - January 2019
Sigh, not shown, upcoming Spiderman movie (yes another one), Men in Black International (yes another one -- this round with Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Chris Helmsworth and Tessa..), a movie on the Joke's origins with Joquin Phoenix playing the titular role. (yes, yet another person playing the Joker and hoping to upstage Heath Ledger. Good luck with that. Not that anyone is counting but we've have had approximately six to date. The best are Heath Ledger and Mark Hamil, the worst Jack Nicholson and Jared Leto.)
C. Others...
1. Star Wars Episode IX -- this round directed by JJ Abrahams...Dec 20, 2019
2. Atremis Fowl - summer sometime
3. Dowton Abbey - Sept 2019
4. Because Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book did so well, we now have live action adaptations of Aladdin, Lion King and Dumbo by big name directors. (I'm holding out for a live action adaptation of the animated song fest Robin Hood...but I can't see how they'd do it.)
5. Sequels and reboots we don't need nor requested but Hollywood did anyhow...Men in Black International, Zombieland 2, It 2, Toy Story 4, Lego Movie 2, Pet Semetary, Child's Play, Grudge (because if you can't come up with a new horror flick idea, remake an old one), 47 Meters Down uncaged (see sentence before this one...and no I didn't know the original flick existed either), the Addams Family ( an animated version...because that hasn't been done before -- not being facetious, I really don't think it has been).
Sigh, there's something for everyone. Now if I just enjoyed forking over $15-16 to see a movie a bit more.
