A Town Like Alice does end well, unlike Shute's other books. But, you have
to go through a very dire bit that takes place during WWII, when the
Japanese invaded British held territory in Asia and marched people about
and put them in camps. So escapist/happy book it's not. I read it over
twenty years ago (during less volatile times and when I was in my early
twenties), so my memories are positive -- I loved it at the time, but I
don't remember it vividly.
