I watched it again a few nights ago, then obsessively looked up every possible detail about the production:

Dead of Night (1945); produced by Ealing Studios

Ealing is famous for its comedies-- like The Ladykillers or Kind Hearts and Coronets--but their one horror movie was a doozy. The granddaddy of the modern horror anthology film, featuring Michael Redgrave as a ventriloquist with a very independent minded dummy:

...you're back to the obscure 1940s, 1950s and 60s classics.

Yep.

You asked, what are you currently obsessed with? Dead of Night is what I really latched onto recently; rewatching made me appreciate its far-reaching influence in the horror genre.

Look, it's not like I don't have an obsessive interest in a current horror TV series. You know I do! But I've talked What We Do In the Shadows to undeath around here, and I wanted to go somewhere else.

I like to go spelunking in pop culture. I do it with music, TV, and film. In this Halloween challenge, I've included everything from the early 1920s up to right now. It's all good. This is how my brain works.

It's also how my wife and I are dealing with the stress in our lives. We don't have Netflix or Disney+ or CBS All Access (we watch too much TV as it is), so we root around in the archives: yesterday, we watched Peter Cushing in Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) and Abel Ferrara's remake of Body Snatchers (1993). (Good-to-OK on both.)

So I'm not trying to aggravate you! Really!

(Hm. I say that to my wife a lot, too...)

I have season one of this series on hold at the library. Is there going to be a second season? Probably--there were three books in the series. It looks great.
