Television Meme 11-21
11: Classic Television or modern? Why?
It depends.
Situation Comedies? Classic. I don't like any sitcoms that started after the 1980s. I don't really know why. Mother and I were discussing this the other night, and realized the best sitcoms aired in the 1970s and 80s. MASH, Happy Days, All in the Family, News Radio, WKRP in Cincinnati, Cheers, Frasier, Cosby Show (early seasons), Wonder Years...Night Court. The humor was witty and subtle, less raunchy. A lot of sitcom humor now is "raunch" humor or embarrassment humor, which makes me cringe. Also the people are either too pretty, look alike or just raunchy.
Mother: What is raunch humor?
Me: The Hang-Over is Raunch Humor. It's embarrassment, crude, sexual humor - often offensive. Aka Raunch.
Procedurals? Classic. The best cop shows were in the 1980s, 1970s and 1990s. Hill Street Blues, Starsky & Hutch, Cagny & Lacey, Prime Suspect, NYPD Blue and Homicide Life on the Streets. And the best medical shows - in the 1980s and 1990s, St. Elsewhere, ER. And legal shows? LA Law.
They just don't have that quality on broadcast cable any longer.
Fantasy/Sci-Fi - Modern, hands down. Although - I still miss Star Trek Next Generation, Voyager, Farscape, and Bab 5 - which were 1990s.
Bab5 and Farscape were my favorites.
Serialized Drama? Modern, although they may never do the mini-series quite as well as the 1980s and 1970s did.
12: Political talks shows or comedic ones?
Comedic Ones. I can't watch political talk shows. I can't. I've tried. Rachel Maddox makes my head hurt. And I agree with her. I really can't stand listening to people talk about politics on television. But I can sit and watch Trevor Noah or Jon Daily, or Stephen Colbert talk about anything.
13: Name a television series with a really bad book/comic/movie adaption.
Brady Bunch. Also Starsky and Hutch. Oh there are so many. So so many...it's frightening really. For a while there - Hollywood thought it would be funny if they did movie adaptations of classic television shows, with highly mixed results. Did we really need a film adaptation of The Avengers (not the MCU Avengers - this was Emma Peel version.) Or a film adaptation of Starsky and Hutch? Or the Brady Bunch? They were going to do a musical adaptation of Green Acres - which I found hilarious - my brother was appalled.
14: Name a television series where the movie/book adaption actually was better than the television series.
This is harder. I kind of liked Mission Impossible better than the television series.
15: What television series changed your life?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (I don't think I need to go into why. I've kind of done that ad naseum. Suffice it to say, we wouldn't know each other if it didn't exist and leave it at that.)
16: If you could bring three television show to a deserted island which would you bring and why?
This is an insane question. Would we have television on the deserted island?
Could we watch them? How? Also wouldn't you want something like Survivor, or
LOST, or How to Survive on a Deserted Island?
Shows I could re-watch forever? Buffy, Farscape, Babylon 5...I think. I might want Cheers or Fraiser.
17: If you owned a television network what would you call it?
I don't know what hasn't been taken already? Abandon Your Mind
18: Which character from a television series is the most like you?
Not sure there is one? Ponders. No, there isn't one.
19: Which character from a television series is the least like you?
Pretty much everyone.
20: Best summer television show?
Hmmm...there aren't really summer television shows any longer. Trying to think of one that aired first in the summer? Maybe Leverage?
It depends.
