Yes, the readership for academic journals is pretty low compared to sites hosting fan meta, and even more so if the journal is paywalled which is generally the case. It's one reason that I decided not to publish my dissertation but to make it available on our university's digital library instead. (And it's not like academics tend to make much, if anything, off their published works).
