The person you mention might be good at something else, but for whatever reasons persists in her current job.
As much as I tell myself the are just card-carrying nincompoops in the world, you are probably right. I am sure there are subjects on which I am as stubbornly stupid as this person. But hopefully those subjects for me aren't as risky to everyone's health.
I pretty much refused to work for large corporations or government entities, where working with people unfit for the jobs they were hired for is part your own job. (Yes, I worked for a university, which always do have some problems along those lines. But generally the people there do tend to be less rigid about things I can't stand.) Because of unions and other government rules to protect people from unreasonable situations, people unfit to do their jobs always get into positions where they create a nuisance that others have to work around. I suspect that I've lived considerably longer than my brother and father did because I didn't spend my working life directly dealing with people who either didn't know what they were doing or didn't care what they were doing as long as they felt important.
