Well, yes and no. I don't really think its being Vietnamese or an immigrant that is the reason, so much as the shame of having a child out of wedlock or being a single mother. But in either case? Not entirely certain it works here? For one thing - she's in a Vietnamese community. And we're in the 21st Century - where being a single parent is rather common place. From what I've seen of the films coming out of Vietnam - it doesn't appear that this is untrue there as well?
I mean, normally, I'd agree - but this feels too similar to other books I've read featuring non-POC characters. Maybe the stigma is heavier in the more rural small town communities? Except, she's in LA, so that doesn't quite work either. Maybe it's from the small village she lived in - except I thought she lived in a city in Vietnam, not a village?
It is a major trope in contemporary romance novels though - the searching for Daddy, single parent, lying about the kid, and needing to be saved by the wealthy guy. (I've read so many contemporary novels with this trope - that I'd say it's not culturally specific.)
