I think his ailment set him back? He faced facial paralysis due to Bell's palsy, which affected the left side of his face. Otherwise, he probably would have done better.
Acker and Denisof were the most talented in my opinion. Marsters has later admitted that he handicapped himself by refusing to take roles similar to Spike, vampires or addicts, because he wanted to stretch, and it backfired.
Boreanze's looks and charisma helped, also he landed Bones. Hannigan lucked out with How I Met Your Mother.
98% of that business is dumb luck. But that's true about most things in life, I think?
I'm considering doing an Angel rewatch midway through the Buffy rewatch. In some respects, Angel had better writing and production values, but like Buffy and most television series, it's also uneven. I remember listening to a Farscape commentary once (it had the best commentaries by the way), that the difficulty with writing 22 episodes a year, is usually you'd have about two-six stinkers, if you were lucky one or two, because it was just the law of averages. You'd have five brilliant episodes, and maybe five not so great ones, a stinker, and the rest middle of the road. Because it was impossible to get everything right throughout.
