Mindless TV fun...
Sigh, where or where did the weekend go? I want another day. But today has been nice and restful. Got some vaccuming done. Got some cleaning done. Spent far too much time playing on LJ. And watched tv and read a little.
Supernatural continues to entertain me. I've managed to get past some of the racism and sexism that was bugging me. It's very noir and that genre does unfortunately have overtones of sexism. Trust me, this I know - I used to get blasted in undergrad by female professors for liking it. That and Westerns, which are also notable for their sexism and racism. And I love Westerns too. Sigh. So I like guy stuff. Speaking of Westerns - there's a really cool one coming out soon - 3:10 to Yuma starring two of my favorite male actors - Russel Crowe and Christian Bale. Directed by the guy who did Walk The Line.
And they say the Western's dead.
This week's Supernatural - was about a film set. And it was written by the brilliant and always witty Ben Edlund - who has some unresolved issues he needs to work out. The piece was apropros - because it's theme was one I discussed a few postings back with
embers_log about how hellish it is to be a screenwriter in hollywood. In this episode the original script-writer gets sooo frustrated by how the directer and studio is handling his script that he conjures a couple of ghosts to punish them. We get quite a few good one-liners during the episode - most delivered by Dean. My favorite concerned the urban legend about the film Poltergeist - where it is rumored that the films were cursed. Three of the actors involved died horrid deaths close to the completion of the filming. (That's true by the way, three of them did die - the little girl, the older sister, and the psychic). Sigh...Supernatural has become my new guilty pleasure. I'm really enjoying this show. Never thought I would. What can I say? When I'm wrong about something - I'm really frigging wrong about it. But hey, at least I'm woman enough to admit it. ;-)
Also watched Flash Gordon today and is it just me or do all the female leads look exactly alike in this show? I had troubles telling them apart. They all have the same hair color and hair length, are approximately the same height and weight, and have similar facial structures. But the men all look very different. Odd. And annoying. What is it with these casting directors any how? Or is it their fault? Were they told - find three gorgeous brunettes who all look like they could be sisters?
I think I may drop this one.
Doctor Who wasn't too bad - it's the episode about Lazerous - the guy who doesn't want to die? Sort of silly and I felt liked I'd seen it before. But it does fit with the general themes of the season - the Doctor's angst over being alone and living forever. And how living forever has affected him and his relationships. Also Tennant is growing on me.
The new fall season? Looks wickedly good. Except for one thing - I think there may be one too many detective shows on tv. There's only so many ways you can solve a mystery without it getting old. And there is such a thing as market saturation. Want to know why Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy did so well - they weren't detective shows.
Let's see - here's a list of all the procedurals currently on tv, I've put stars next to the ones that focus on *cough*characters*cough* as opposed to JUST the case and well that I've actually watched more than fifteen minutes of:
1. Law & Order
2. Law & Order Special Victims Unit
3. Law & Order Criminal Intent
4. CSI
5. CSI Miami
6. CSI New York
7. Cold Case**
8. Crossing Jordan**
9. Criminal Minds**
10. Bones**
11. Without A Trace* (jury is still out)
12. The Closer**
13. Saving Grace (not really a procedural...but it is a detective show)**
14. House (medical procedural may or may not count)**
Now...do we really need 14 procedurals? Whoever decided to spawn off the L&O and CSI, deserves their own special office in hell in my opinion. Unless of course they succeed in killing off the franchise - in which case, more power to them. But I don't see that happening. How in the hell they find an audience, I don't know. There's no way the audience this appeals to has the time to watch all 14 of them, unless that's all they watch...but still. Okay maybe all 11 - The Closer, Saving Grace and House are sort of odd ducks on that list.
Here's the roster of Detective/Mystery shows:
Women's Murder Club
Moonlight
Blood Ties
Amsterdam
Pushing Daisies
Granted at least four are supernatural or quirky shows, but still. How many murders do we really need to solve? I know the mystery genre is popular but this is pushing things a bit, don't you think?
New Shows I'm looking forward to:
Pushing Daisies
Bionic Woman
Journeyman
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Moonlight
Amsterdam (assuming it gets an air date)
Reaper
Viva Laughlin
Cane
Dirty Sexy Money
Big Shots
My tv schedule...waaay too crowded. So much so, I'm hoping a couple of these really suck. TV has never been this much fun. ;-) Lucky for me in this day and age, with cable, I don't have to worry that there are 11 procedurals on tv - because there's plenty of room for all the other shows too.
