Sounds a great deal like Tales of Arabian Nights which is basically a bunch of interlocking tales told by one teller, each a metaphor for her situation. I think from reading the writer's blog that may have been the inspiration for the tales. Which are in a way similar to the type of short story anthologies AS Byatt has played with. They aren't short stories exactly but not a novel either...sort of a combo.
