Ah. You read more books than I do a month, that's for sure. Usually takes me two to three weeks to finish one. Granted I read primarily on the train to and from work and before bed - which is about an hour or two a day, tops. Also I'm very ecclectic in my tastes...I honestly think I've read a book in every single genre imaginable. ;-) (Not as many in the literary as I'd like, but literary books often take more effort than I can mentally give when I working and writing.)
I think a lot of it is time. People with small children - don't have it. And so many people just want to veg or socialize when they get home from work or go to the gym. Le Quin does a good job of pointing that out in her essay -= I didn't reproduce all of what she said on that topic above.
