The wealthy can absolutely hide their issues as they have the resources to do so. For the poor, there are fewer choices in how to handle situations. I saw that very clearly in high school.
And as to stopping generalizing, knowing that you (not you specifically) do it is the start, and I think we *all* do to varying extents. I think imagining one in another's shoes is still the best way. Perception guides behaviors, and when perceptions change, behaviors hopefully follow.
