Because he's never lied to the fans before to prevent spoilage for a future story, has he? ;-)
If, as you suspect (as do I), that he wants to mate up the Buffyverse with the Frayverse, somehow another dimension needs to be opened on a massive scale, and the demons offloaded into it. That takes two things-- 1. Something like the Key, and 2. A very powerful wielder of magicks.
And we have both of those, do we not? Yea, verily.
BTW, remember that post I did forever ago over at ATPo, where I predicted that Whedon wanted to make Buffy into a god-like being over the long term? I'm now waiting for the next issue after Giles does his explainy thing, and then Andrew will say, "Hey, she's like the Quisatz Haderach now!"
(Or maybe "Hey, she's like Paul Atredes!")
And of course no one in the gang will know what the hell he's talking about.
