In the US - for some reason, most of the popular culture/mainstream "girl coming of age stories" are centered on the big event of the girl losing her virginity or getting pregnant or falling in love. There are a few exceptions - To Kill A Mockingbird - comes to mind, as does Member of the Wedding - where the focal point is on something else.
But film and television appear to paint a different message. So, too, for that matter, does popular fiction - ie the stuff on the best-seller lists, which is interesting.
