"Buffy the character seemed to have moved beyond most of that already". The operative word would be "seemed". One of the question about the characters in Btvs is "do we really change"? The answer is yes and no. So I don't think it's so clear cut about Buffy.
It depends if you consider that the universe is some metaphor for society. Though societies are complex there're still many conservative trends going on tending to assign specific places to women.
Now, that being said I'm not going to say the comics are good or bad because I don't know, I haven't read them. It's just that some points seem solid such as the OCCness and OTTness being deliberate.
