I caved. Decided to give myself a little treat and upgraded to HBO with On Demand. YAY!
Very excited to see Game of Thrones and last Seasons True Blood which is being re-run on it.
I think it was a combination of Bellafante's annoying NY Times review and the realization that some of the best tv shows are popping up on HBO - they are also prepping Neil Gaiman's American Gods for a series. And "Game Change".

It's not that pricey. About the price of a movie once a month - and I rarely go to movies any more.
(Movies in NYC cost $15 without popcorn or soda.)

I guess it should be noted that I am not a subscriber to the NY Times - why bother, I get better news and reviews for free elsewhere. The Times has gone downhill over the past four years. I used to subscribe and pick up every weekend, but finally gave up.

They're doing American Gods too? So cool!

I'd take it too if I could over here. As it is I'm left to get the really lovely stuff on DVD.

Yep, read about it on [livejournal.com profile] selenak's journal. Apparently it's being developed by Tom Hanks and the same writers that did the award winning The Pacific. Neil Gaimen is slated to write a few episodes. Same framework as George RR Martin. This works because both Gaimen and Martin have scriptwriting experience.
Both wrote films and tv shows at different points.

It was one of the final factors...the shows that excite me are on HBO at the moment, doesn't help that I've either read or own the books they are based on.
