As I am an on screen canon only person who doesn't read the comics, I can't comment on them. On screen, Angel did make his share of bad choices, granted, starting with going to Holtz behind Connor's back (as Cordelia told him). But he also tried to reach out to Connor, and honestly, if not for the Jasmine interference I think they could have reached a dysfunctional modus vivendi.
