YES! Finally! Thank you! A Romance Novelist Who Gets it Right.
50 Shades Darker...in this section, Jack, Anastasia nasty boss, attempts to rape her. It's how she fights him off that is making me applaud. Seriously, you have no idea how many romance novels, thrillers, mystery novels, and tv series not to mention literary works and fanfic and oh God, GWDT, that I've read in my lifetime that have written this same scene all wrong. Finally, someone who gets it right - with a heroine who would do exactly what I'd do. Exactly what every woman should do.
My fear rises to DEFCON 1, threatening to overwhelm me. "No, Jack. I have never led you on."
"You have, you prick-teasing bitch. I can read the signs." Reaching up, he gently strokes my face with the back of his knuckles, down to my chin. His index finger strokes my face with the back of his knuckles, down to my chin. His index finger strokes my throat, and my heart leaps into my mouth as I fight my gag reflex. He reaches the dip at the base of my neck, where the top button of my black shirt is open, and presses his hand against my chest.
"You want me. Admit Ana."
Keeping my eyes firmly fixed on his and concentrating on what I have to do - rather than my mushrooming revulsion and dread - I place my hand gently over his in a caress. He smiles in triumph. I grab his little finger and twist it back, pulling it sharply down backward to his hip.
"Arrgh!" he cries out in pain and surprise, and as he leans off balance, I bring my knee, swift and hard, up into his groin, and make perfect contact with my goal. I dodge deftly to my left as his knees buckle, and he collapes with a groan onto the kitchen floor, grasping himself between his legs.
"Don't you ever touch me again, " I snarl at him. "Your itinerary and brochures are packaged on my desk. I am going home now. Have a nice trip. And in the future, get your own damn coffee."
Something worth remembering? Male genitalia hangs outside their body, exposed and only covered by fabric. And it is the most sensitive part of them. Ladies/Gents? If some asswipe decides to
be sexually aggressive? Kick him HARD where it counts. And do it more than once. Then leave.
More powerful sex, my foot. Lorena Bobbit proved long ago...that was so not the case. (grinning evilly).
What none of the silly reviewers understand about this book is it is not the BDSM sex or the sex in general that has people compelled, but the story within, which is different than anything else I've read in the Romance Genre to date. Oh sure the character archetypes are the same.
But...James does things I've been screaming at these ninny romance novelists to do, and none of them have. That scene is just one of many many examples. Nora Roberts and Rosemary Rodgers should take notes.
