My main problem with Magic Mike - aside from the dull love interest and the messy structure of the movie (so they're just going to leave the brother on a downward spiral and that's ok?) - was that for all it was billed as a female-gaze driven girls night out movie, it actually had major problems with women. The female audience members exist to adore and be awed by the strippers, who themselves are shown as always being in control. We never see any of the club's patrons being repulsed or anything other than momentarily uncomfortable, even when being manhandled; they're also almost all young, pretty and thin - the one time we see a heavier woman it's played for a fat joke, with one of the strippers acting like he's hurt his back lifting her. It ends up being a male fantasy rather than a female one or the realistic take on life the movie seems to believe it is. I think Channing Tatum is an amazing dancer but that movie felt like a slap in the face.
