That said, there are characters whose deaths...are more permanent and gut-wrenching. But they too fall into categories. There is a fourth category - or maybe it's a subcategory of 3. When the character death is *personal*. I don't know how else to describe it, and it's only happened to me once and hopefully never will again. rm did a lot of writing about it (as it was pretty much a whole fandom in mourning), although I think she's flocked most of it and this is the most relevant post I can find. What makes it stand out though, is the public memorial... Not just the fannish response, but the fact that this spawned an actual plaque.
