The whole thing from start to finish was structured badly. The narrative should have protected Buffy, but it doesn't.
I agree. Ironically, the narrative is probably attempting to protect Spike. Possibly, the writers thought they had protected him enough.
Just goes to show how thoughtless and stupid they were.
