This seems to be a direct result of the writer spending far too much time on the internet's social media interacting with their fandoms. As a result, we get a lot of geeky winking - which I'm finding increasingly distracting. I'd say in the case of Moffat and Gatiss it's not interacting with fandom, but the fact that they are themselves fans.
We actually met Sherlock's parents, who were amusingly ordinary. Like John, you can't help but wonder how Sherlock and Mycroft came from that. They are actually Benedict Cumberbatch's real parents. :)
He seems to have a bit of Ausperger's or Autism, too sensitive, so shuts off a part of himself in order to function. *nods a lot*
