shadowkat: (Tv shows)

In my last post, in regards to 50 Shades of Grey film, I mentioned that I've seen far more violent sex scenes on HBO. Yep, pretty much. Take "Game of Thrones" for example - the writers only show us a sex scene if somebody is being raped. We rarely see anything else. Mainly because sex in of itself isn't all that interesting to watch. But still.

I've finished watching the most recent season of Game of Thrones, or GOT S5. And...
it has definitely left the books behind in some respects. Have no idea where they're going next. If you didn't read the books, you need no longer worry about fans of the books spoiling you. As shipperx pointed out in a post a while back, we're all Unsullied now. Book purists need not apply. [I think the book purists have stopped watching the television series for that very reason.]

Overall, it wasn't a bad season. There were some good points. Jon Snow, Ayra, Theon, Dany and Cersei's arcs for the most part followed the books fairly closely. Cersei actually is more likable in the television series, and more sympathetic. In the books, I kept wishing they'd just kill her off already. They didn't. Tyrion, Jorah, Stannis, Brienne, Sansa, Davvos, Mance Ryder, Melisandre, Little Finger, Jamie, Sam, and Myrcella's arcs did not follow the books - in some respects this was a good thing. The books meandered in part due to those characters arcs and GRR Martin's desire to add new characters to the plotline, as if he didn't have enough already.

I could have done without some of the added character deaths. Seriously, it's not like Martin doesn't kill off enough characters on his own.

* Jon Snow - he died exactly the same way he did in the book. People who read the books swear he's still alive. I don't know. If he is - it's as a warg and that's problematic, as evidenced in the books. I suppose he could warg into Dragon, which would be interesting but tough to pull off on the television series. Also, unlike the books, there's no evidence that Jon Snow can do that. Bran yes, Snow, no. Or Melisandra could find a way of resurrecting him - she needs a new king for her god.

It was tragic in the same way it was in the books. Thought the same thing both times. Dang-it, just when I was beginning to like the character. And I guess the whole whose kid is Jon Snow plot arc is now null and void? Or doesn't really matter?

Serve the Night's Watch right if Snow came back as a White Walker. I actually think everyone on the Night's Watch is going to get consumed by the White Walker's anyhow. Jon was actually their only hope of defeating them.

* Dany - she ended up more or less where she was in the books. Except, it was more of a desert. She had walked a long ways. And she was more defiant. I actually liked the stand-off better in the books. Loved her interactions with the dragons.

*Tyrion per usual is the best thing in the series. And his interactions with Jorah and the Sellsword sleeping with Dany were great. I love their interactions. Also loved Tyrion's interactions with Dany and her hubby. This played out better than it did in the books, I think. Although in the books, she had freed all three dragons. The dragons killed more people. And Dorn had sent a prince who got killed by one of them. Tyrion hadn't met her. And Jorah and Tyrion were still stuck in the slave camps.

I liked this better.

* Sansa - she escapes with Theon, he finally finds some courage and redeems himself. I preferred the book arc, actually. It was less misogynistic. And Mance Raider was involved, although that was admittedly hard to buy, considering we watched him burn and get shot in the head with an arrow. At least, we didn't have to watch Ramsey torture her like he did with Theon. The books were in some respects worse. In the books, Theon was forced to pleasure the girl first, or sodomize her, prior to Ramsey raping her.

* Brienne - Dang it. Her arc is frustrating no matter what. I actually liked having Theon's sister involved with Stannis, better than Brienne, it was more interesting.
Brienne has decided to abandon her seemingly futile post watching over Sansa, to avenge Remy Barrathon, who no one but Brienne cared about. Except, seriously, who is the lesser of the two evils here, Brienne? Stannis or the Boltons. Hmmm, let me think.

* Stannis- he doesn't burn his daughter alive in the books. Actually they are afraid he's going to kill Mance's kid, so Jon Snow sends Sam, Gilly, and Maester Aeon away with the kid, keeping Gilly's kid at the Night's Watch. I think she kills Gilly's kid, can't remember.

It wasn't as bad as I thought. We didn't see it, we heard it. Although afterwards, I thought they deserved their defeat at the hands of the Bolton's. Because that was just evil.

* Can they please kill off the Boltons? They aren't even fun villains. The Frays and Boltons are just irredeemably annoying.

* Jamie and Dorn - more entertaining than in the books. The sand snakes were far deadlier. Myrcella did not deserve to die. My heart went out to Jamie -- who loses his daughter immediately after she acknowledges him as her father, and states she loves him and is glad of it. I think this is not going to end well for Dorn.

Myrcella and Tommen take after their father.

Loved the Sellsword, Bronn. Bronn and Jamie are fun together. Just as Varys and Tyrion are. The got some fun male pairings on this series.

* Ayra's arc is the same as the books. Don't worry she won't stay blind. But she is being turned into an assassin.

Adore the actress. She's perfect.

Overall? B-

A bit too violent for my taste. And slow in parts. But kept my interest for the most part. And I loved the dragon.
