shadowkat: (Tv shows)

Gave up on the broadcast/cable summer waste-land of television shows, and plugged in my Amazon Fire Stick. It's wickedly cool. I now have netflix streaming, free, for 30 days. And finally, finally found a tv show that holds my attention for more than one episode - Daredevil, three episodes in and I'm rather impressed. Helps of course that there are no commercials. Commercials break up the momentum of the story. Also the episodes are beautifully shot, directed, acted and written. It was created by Drew Goddard (Buffy, Angel, Cabin in the Woods, Lost) and executive produced and written by Stephen DeKnight and Jeff Loeb. Adam Kale is directing all the episodes.

It's just brilliant in comparison to the crap that I've been watching. (Seriously, the best television shows that I've seen this summer are Poldark and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - and both have pacing issues. Actually Poldark is more compelling than Strange/Norrell - possibly due to the lack of commercials. Humans...isn't holding my interest. Watched two episodes...and I'm drifting away, because it got predictable, and I figured out where they were going. Really wish they didn't turn the AI being forced to be a prostitute into a killer. Nor does it help that I'm sympathetic to the AI's and annoyed by some of the humans.) Daredevil just has really interesting and compelling characters, lots of shades of gray, and great acting. Also it's paced better.

Totally understand why so many people have fled to streaming, and why Netflix and Amazon are taking over the television landscape and the emmy's.

Yay! I'm very happy for you. And I have heard many good things about Daredevil. (Also about Sense8, although I don't know if that's on Netflix.) Enjoy. Netflix does have a lot of great stuff.

Poldark (which was shown here in spring) absolutely stole my heart. It's Sunday night BBC costume drama, and very very good at what it does. ♥

It's by far the tightest and best developed series based on a comic book or graphic novel to date. And it reminds me a bit of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies, except I think it may be better done. Just finished watching an episode with Scott Glenn playing Murdoch's mentor.

In some respects it's what Gotham should have been.

Very impressed by it.

Sense8 is a Netflix series. Netflix really has managed to raise the bar on tv series.
They have a lot of the emmy nominations. Here's the slate of Netflix series:

Unbreakable Kimmy
Orange is the New Black
House of Cards
Daredevil
Sense8
Bloodlines

All critical raves.

Also they follow the British television model - about 6 to 10 episodes per season, which helps a great deal. I think 22 episodes is a lot to expect from a television writer. They start to burn out.

Stick is a fascinating and mysterious character. I loved the Chinese woman too...and Wesley!

Daredevil is incredibly addictive! I just binge-watched it a few months ago.

Enjoy the end of the season!
