Oh, I picked up Magic Stars a while ago, haven't gotten around to reading it yet, though. (Don't normally pick up the novellas, mainly because not a fan of the art-form, but the reviews made it clear that this was necessary to the story arc and various supporting character arcs and if you didn't read it, certain plot points later on may not make much sense.)
Also, I'll repeat my recommendation for The Traitor Baru Cormorant. I can't describe the plot because there are so many twists that I'd spoil something, but I'm sure you'd like it.
Thank you! I was hoping you'd repeat youre rec for that one. Since I couldn't for the life of me remember the title, and wasn't looking forward to hunting through past posts and comments for it. I need to go get that one...the one I'm reading now is irritating me. It started out with great promise and potential, but sort of fell off the rails halfway through. (Uprooted by Naomi Novick - it references a similar Eastern European mythos as Illona Andrews but without any teeth to it or wit for that matter, and a somewhat whiny heroine. Novick rambles. And can't do decent dialogue to save her life. Think of a fantasy series, but with Dawn as the lead and rambling battle scenes that go on forever.)
