Prairie Village explains a lot. If you went Kansas 10 (the shortest route to Lawrence from there) before it was rerouted and made limited access it could take quite a while. Same thing if you wiggled north to get on the Turnpike.

My grandfather lived about 50 miles north of Wichita so I know how 'exciting' Kansas driving can be. Driving across Kansas from there on west into Colorado is a good way to get into country music on the radio, cause the scenery isn't going to keep you awake.
