I can sort of identify...I went off part of my diet, I thought, well things are going well, and I can go back to baking gluten free cookies, eating chocolate...then wham. It's not the same of course, but I do understand it. I take tremor meds and the temptation to get off of it is always there.
People say it all the time about people who are bi-polar, why did they go off their meds? Because it's frigging hard to be on medication. You have to remember to take it. You have to bring it with you. It has side-effects. You can't have certain meds or drinks with it. You have to see a doctor once a year for refills.
And anti-depressants...are even harder. You are constantly tweaking.
It's incredibly sad. He was fighting a mental illness with everything he could think of, took one misstep and the illness finally won. But if you read the wiki entry, Foster Wallace was one seriously messed up dude. Depression wasn't his only problem. I can't help but think the brilliance was also a curse?
