This never occurred to me as a direct result of the weakening of the Voting Rights Act in 2013.

While the Native American population is small nationally, lawsuits involving tribes over voting problems have proliferated since the Supreme Court struck down parts of the Voting Rights Act in 2013, a signature legislative achievement of the 1960s civil rights movement.

North Dakota is one of 17 states that have new voting restrictions in place since the last presidential contest, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law.

Many of these changes have sparked lawsuits and accusations that black, Hispanic and other minority voters could be disenfranchised.

Five federal lawsuits involving Native Americans have been filed since the Supreme Court decision, including three this year alone.

The Arizona law like this has been in effect for quite a while. Maybe a decade. I remember an election I went to the polls and had to show a driver's license. As I said somewhere before, I've been voting by mail for a long time. There were other kinds of state-issued photo ID that people could get besides driver's licenses. But after our Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano went to work for Obama in Washington I think the Republicans quietly did away with most of them. The law here was definitely aimed against Hispanics, but has effected the Native tribes at some point. I would guess the more well-to-do Arizona tribes (the Navaho, and the ones with casinos) have mostly taken care of their own by now on this score, although I'm sure they'd prefer the state would do more and wouldn't mind joining suits to make it happen.

I wonder if some of the issues that arose during the Arizona primaries may be a result of that law. At any rate, this is going to an interesting election. I'm hoping it's not going to be a repeat of Gore vs. Bush....I really don't want Trump as President. Bush, in retrospect, doesn't seem that bad...
