Sci-fi television writers don't seem to do military stories well without falling into cliché for some reason. There are a few, mainly the space operas, but shows like Sherlock, Doctor Who, Buffy, Supernatural, etc...just tend to do the stereotype.

The Expanse, Farscape, Battle Star Galatica handled these sorts of stories far better.

And yep, I think part of the problem is Mark Gatiss, who is a sloppy writer.
