I'm afraid that while the conversation you overheard may be a true description of the way some people react to disagreement, it is not a true description of the nature of disagreement itself.
The way to prevent emotions inhibiting discussion is to speak and think in ways that elevate truth and reason above all else. Whatever the issue, to truly care about it in a meaningful way is to accept one's own fallibility and remain open to whatever is supported by evidence and argument. To be frank, a person who is not capable of this has not yet really grown up, as that person is selfishly allowing an internal tantrum to squash their own personal growth as well as the growth of the people around them.
