Actually this ep was recorded before she went on leave while she was still pregnant (you can see her carrying things to hide the baby bump in several shots). So that is why she looks softer. That is also why there is no Lt Pierce. This episode, and three others, were originally supposed to be standalones as part of season 2, presumably intended to fill in before the finale arc. They got moved to this season for some reason I don't know, but presumably to do with money.
