Listening to the SotU isn't an actual Congressional duty. The Constitution requires that the President advise Congress on the SotU, but it doesn't say that must be done orally. For over 100 years, from Jefferson to Wilson, no President gave an oral SotU. Not Jefferson, not Madison, not Lincoln, not Teddy Roosevelt, not one. They were all written.
Considering how boring they are, that's probably a good practice.
