Wilson was a former professor, so he probably did like to hear himself talk. Before Wilson, someone else besides the president did always read the address to Congress. Maybe Wilson thought more would listen if he read it himself. The Constitution says there should be some formal act of informing the Congress from time to time. The current yearly show just developed over time.
I haven't sat and listen to a State of the Nation for years and years. Having politcos dutifully applaud for their party's favorite ideas each and every time they are mentioned drives me nuts, no matter which party.
