Feb. 9th, 2018 09:59 pm1. Slowly making headway with television viewing, although there is still 34 hours worth of television saved on the DVR, and I may never make it to the last three episodes of Poldark, seven episodes of The Expanse, an episode of The Good Doctor, last two episodes of The Resident and Black Lightening, Victoria, Riverdale, Kevin Probably Saves the World,The Exorcist, Queen Elizabeth's Secret Agents, The Big Bang Theory, Scandal, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace.
But I have watched 911, Lucifer, This is Us, Grey's Anatomy, The Good Place Finale and General Hospital which I watch in lieu of the evening news. (I don't need to, my mother feels the need to keep me updated on world events whether I want to be.)
Also, watching the Winter Olympics. Apparently North and South Korea decided to band together for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Korea. Also according to a cubicle mate, people are boycotting the restaurants for serving dog. It could be worse, it could be cat or human. Hmmm, I'd just go vegetarian.
The Opening Ceremonies are quite lovely at any rate and fascinating -- they are incorporating a lot of technology in their presentation. I like the skating events, and the skiing, so may watch the Olympics. I'm admittedly not necessarily fan of most spectator sports, but I enjoy watching the Olympics. And will on occasion watch a ball game.
I've posted on most of the tv shows I've seen. No one on flist watches This is Us, 911, or GH, so no point posting on those. GH is doing a storyline about a grieving widow blaming her best friend for her husband's death -- which is beyond stupid, but luckily it's a soap and there's about fifteen on-going storylines, so I can safely ignore it. (Which I'd have done anyhow, because I don't give a fig about the widow, her friend or the dead hubby.)
2. Next week, a new friend has invited me to the premiere fan viewing of Black Panther at the AMC 42nd Street Theater in Manhattan. We have assigned seating apparently. Should be interesting. I met her via another activity. She's a superhero comic book and film geek like I am -- with a background in the industry. So we more or less talk the same language -- in that we like to pull the film apart and analyze it.
Co-worker who is a bit of film geek like I am, but also a little more discriminating. Didn't get why I was interested in a blockbuster superhero flick -- aren't they all the same? I said, well yes and no. I adore genre. And this is a big deal.
Co-worker: Why?
Me: Because it's the first time they've done a superhero film in which 98% of the cast is black, and
the superheros are black.
Co-worker: OH! That's why people are going nuts.
ME: It's similar to Wonder Woman...which was first time they did it with women. Also, the comics were taken over by Tah-Nesi Coates, who wrote Between the World and Me.
Co-Worker: did he write the film?
Me: Don't know, don't think so -- but he's involved with the comics now. So it's gotten big.
I find films the flip the script or subvert the genre interesting.
Although I've mixed feelings regarding the trailers which seem rather busy. But he was the most interesting new character they've introduced.
I've been finding here and there a few more culture geeks like myself, so I don't have to bore you guys with this stuff any longer.

Date: 2018-02-10 07:29 pm (UTC)Then again despite the table being filled with science instructors (not sure why our league is all science faculty) when I brought up the Space X achievement of this past week there were just some general nods and agreements that it was exciting news but no further discussion. Conversation about the unnecessary use of meetings however was a long running discussion ;)
There was a bit of talk about the Olympics though as the dinner ran long we missed a good bit of it by the time we got home. I think I might be able to get the opening ceremonies on demand, I'll have to check. I always enjoy them but the narration from NBC always drives me nuts. I wish they could just run them without any talking.

Date: 2018-02-10 07:49 pm (UTC)Agreed. Apparently you can stream them online without the commentary...although I have yet to figure out how, and (outside of the amazon fire stick stuck to my tv) my streaming devices have small screens that require reading glasses.
My problem with the Olympics -- and pretty much all sports events is a) the frigging commentary, 2) the interviews, and 3) the commercials. I just want to watch the sport. I get bored.

For some reason at these types of interactions, people like to talk about 1) their pets, 2) their health, 3) their kids, 4) complain about something, 5)their homes, 6) vacations, or 7) sports.
I think it's because for the most part all of that is safely mundane, there's little chance of stepping on personal landmines (well for the most part), and you can forget it later. It requires little thought or much attention and tends to be relateable to the majority of folks.

Date: 2018-02-11 01:34 am (UTC)I sometimes start watching shows (or resume watching shows I'd quit) because of people's posts about them. Like Nashville, for example. I'm going to rewatch season one with my husband, which we own, and get the other seasons from the library.
I have seen about a half or three quarters of the first season of This is Us. I liked it but there is already so much that I'll never get caught up, especially since my husband won't watch anything but comedies right now. Maybe this summer...
I am rewatching season two of The Expanse in preparation for season three starting in March. I am not rewatching The Americans. It's too depressing but I am going to force myself to watch the final season.
Admittedly, I watch very little TV now. But I still enjoy reading about what other people are watching.
