1. Do you enjoy receiving books as holiday or birthday gifts?

Yes. Used to be my favorite gift growing up. I went straight for the books under the Xmas tree like a bee-line.

2. What book are you reading (or, what is the last book you read)?

Children of Blood and Bone by Toni Adeymei, a critically acclaimed YA novel. Also X-men comic books.

3. Are you enjoying (or, did you enjoy) that book? Why or why not?

Weirdly I'm enjoying the X-men comic books more. It's a bit overrated (Children of Blood and Bone, not the comic books...no one overrates comic books, if anything they underrate superhero comic books). And definitely YA. I'm hoping my niece likes it. Since apparently it's the only Xmas gift she got this year. (My mother told me that she hadn't gotten them anything, no time, and that he told her that was okay because they weren't buying themselves gifts -- since, hello, going to Hawaii for two weeks.)

4. About how many books do you read in an average year?

No idea. It varies. Anywhere between thirty to sixty, sometimes less, sometimes more. Depends on the books, my mood, and how much time I have to read. Less this year than most, because reading slump. And I can't go by Good Reads for a couple of reasons: 1) I occasionally forget to tell Good Reads that I actually read and finished a book. 2) I often DNF books and Good Reads counts them.

I suck at tabulating stuff. It is not how I think.

5. What are some of the books on your to-read pile (or list).

Sigh...too many to list.

* Crime and Punishment
* An Irish Country Village by Patrick Taylor
* Several romance novels by Laura Kinsale
* Several comic books
* Alexander Hamilton biography
* Dance Dance Dance by Harukimai something or other
* Book of Dust by Philip K Pullman

The list is endless.

2.) It's raining. Finally.

I had tenative plans with Wales yesterday, but she has a horrible cold. So, no. Wanting until I get back. The last thing I need is to get sick and take it with me on holiday. I'm more worried about my parents catching something than me.

It would most likely kill my father. And we don't want that.

Talking to Wales is reassuring in a weird way. No matter how bad things are -- Wales reminds me that they could always be so much worse. Her life is a train wreck...that is still in motion.

I tell her about my Dad. She says something. I'm like -- yeah, I know, you're situation is 100 times worse.

As an aside, why do we do that? Compare ourselves to other's lives? This feels like a major flaw in the programming somehow. Certainly doesn't lead to happiness, misery, yes, happiness no.

Yes. Which must be why envy is one of the "seven deadly sins." No wonder no one gets into the Good Place. It's a design flaw.

Yes, you either feel miserable because the other person is better off, or sad because they are worse off!
