1. Books and writing and publishing...or rather giving up on the whole publishing one's own writing thing because the world is unworthy of the effort

Me: I've wanted to write and share my stories all my life. Then I read really crappy books and see four to five star reviews for them on Amazon and Good Reads. And think to myself, seriously, why bother. People have such colossally bad taste. Like take the book I'm reading for example -- it's horrible, yet has four to five star reviews. Someone on Amazon even said the writer could do no wrong...the mind boggles.
Mother: If you don't like the book why are you reading it?
Me: No clue. It's so bad I can't stop? Example? There's the following phrase: "No one could get through to him. Except but one person."
Mother: Yeah that...doesn't work.
Me: Particularly when my mind keeps flipping words when I get distracted or tired and it becomes "Except one but person."
Mother laughs her head off.

2. Conversation with co-worker about Superhero films and films in general (aka Mini-Lando or Chidi...looks more like Chidi from the Good Place, actually).

Me: Have you seen "US"?
Chidi: No, it's not out until this weekend.
Me: Oh for some reason I thought it had been released already, movie buddy wanted to see it or Captain Marvel. I voted for Captain Marvel -- since I do not watch horror movies on the big screen. (I value my sleep.) In case you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a nervous personality.
Chidi: Yeah I pretty much got that. So how was Captain Marvel?
Me: Not as good as Black Panther. Bit slow in places. Also Nick Fury had most of the focus, not that this was necessarily a bad thing -
Chidi: You liked Black Panther that much? It's a super-hero film. They are all alike.
Me: Well, no. Some are better than others...and you sort of have to like superhero films...
Chidi: Do you think Black Panther deserved the Oscar?
Me: No. But then I don't think any of the films deserved it. Roma came closest, and even it had problems. I saw seven of the eight films nomintated, and I wouldn't have given any of them an award. The only one I didn't see is the one that won -- no interest.
Chidi: Me neither.
Me: Yep, seen it before -- not that film -
Chidi: But the concept? Yeah totally agree. No interest in it either. If Beale Street Could Talk is the one I'd have given it to -
Me: And it wasn't even nominated.
Chidi: Have you seen it?
Me: No, but I hope to. (Just hasn't become available on demand yet.)
Chidi: I really want you to see it -- so I can see where we are in terms of movies. I loved it. Superhero movies..eh..
Me: They are fun. Some are better than others.

Chidi doesn't agree. He thinks all superhero films are alike. Sigh. Cubical mate does agree with me as does movie buddy. Considering I see them or most of them with movie buddy -- movie buddy's opinion is really the only one that matters in regards to superhero films. You really need to see a superhero flick with a like-minded person. (I know I've seen them with people who aren't into them or aren't like-minded, and yes, it makes a huge difference.)

I told Chidi to tell me about US, he's seeing it this weekend. And not to worry about spoilers. I'm more than willing to be spoiled on it.

3. Art vs. Computer art vs. Beauty

Frustrated Screenwriter (aka Walter White coworker): Music done on computer isn't music.
Me: Okay, I get that -- considering I don't think art done on computer is art.
WW: I don't know I've seen some amazing and beautiful images done by computers.
Me: Beauty doesn't necessarily equal art. Art is human expression. If it is done by a computer -- is that expression?

Now that I'm thinking about it, I've decided it possibly is and I'm wrong about that. Because if you consider the computer is a tool or an instrument operated by human hands, how is it different than say a pencil, pen or a piano? It's not. However if the computer is doing it on its own without human interaction with it -- as a program, like say playing chess, then...is it art?

My head hurts. You can figure that one out. My brother, who has a degree in graphic art and has taught graphic art, would probably insist it is art.

All superhero movies are not the same. That's like saying "all Westerns are the same" or "all romantic comedies are the same."

Each genre has specific benchmarks, but the approach can differ based on the background of the writer, the director, or even the film studio. It can vary depending on the era in which the film is made. The Magnificent Seven and The Wild Bunch, despite being only eight years apart, are two completely movies.

Marvel movies do have a certain "in-house" formula, but even here, we have differences in style and mood. Coogler (Black Panther) and Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) both use the same raw pulp materials, but to entirely different ends. And on the DC end, Batman and Shazam! barely belong in the same universe.

So (very politely) tell Chidi he's got a stick up his you know what on this topic. (That's why everybody hates philosophy professors... )
