Agreed. It didn't work for me either. I listened to the writers (and other fans, including that essay above) and they said that she'd suffered too much loss, and now even Jon turned from her. (But this is a woman who has had multiple lovers, lovers far more adept and far more attractive than Jon -- I mean come on -- I can't see her being that upset about Jon.)
While yeah, the loss bit, maybe -- but why take out everything in that manner? It was like she went rogue. She's already been told that Cersei doesn't care about her people -- so wouldn't it make more sense to head directly for Cersei and take her out, face to face? Not to mention more satisfying? What did she really gain by doing this?
The hereditary madness thing? I don't think that works either -- since like you said, people don't snap just like that.
It's not that I can't see her becoming a tyrant or going down that road...but not that fast.
