I think both Whedon and Thomas failed to realize that the fans cared less about the lead than they did the ensemble.
I certainly was more interested in the other characters and Veronica's relationships with all of them (Keith, Mack, Weevil, etc...) than I was in either the romance or Veronica herself. (TV writers suck at romantic relationships. They don't seem to understand how to build conflict without falling into cliche or making it about sex. The fact that they are married makes me wonder about their marriages...) And as cjlasky put it -- Veronica's relationship with Neptune was the most interesting thing about the series -- and why UPN wasn't interested in Veronica joins the FBI.
Thomas just failed to realize that the people watching his series weren't watching for "Veronica" or "Bell". I don't see it surviving post-Neptune. Post-Logan, yes. Post-Neptune? No.
