Watched episode 2 of Prodigal Son more intently after skimming through the pilot. Still a bit too Criminal Minds-ish for me (the lecture on this week's serial killer came straight from CM's Dr. Spenser Reid "too much information" series), but if you don't watch Criminal Minds, I guess you won't notice.
What I like about this series is the off kilter sense of humor. It's almost "Monk as a drama". Malcolm is in an absurdly dark place, and he's forced to have a sense of humor about his situation or he might implode. There are some bleakly funny scenes in this episode that work surprisingly well. I also like Martin's cheery outlook. He's the smiling-est, peppiest serial killer on TV.
The downside: I think I see a potential "plot twist" coming a mile away. I hope I'm wrong...
