1. Took a walk today. It was a short twenty minute walk up the street and back again. I took pics of various things on the street. Including the plastic wrapped around the door handles - which my Crazy Uncle told me not to touch because that would really collect the virus. I don't know if that is necessarily true. There's an annoying trait in my family - which I like to call - the "know it all or pseudo expert/lecturer" - I see it myself, my brother and my father. Less so, my mother - so it's definitely my father's family. Oh well, their hearts are in the right place.
The virus has been shown to live on hard surfaces longer...but it's not like I touch my face after I touch it, what I do is when I enter my apartment, I wash my hands first, before removing the face mask and hat. Then I spray the keys with Lysol, the door with Lysol and any hard surface that I touched with it. Then I wipe my cell phone with a Clorox wipe, and spray the purse with Lysol. Then I wash my hands again. It's become sort of a routine. Before leaving the apartment, face mask, bandana, hat (to keep hair out of face and hands away from hair), purse, jacket, keys. I used to wear gloves but was advised by Midnight Jane (an ICU Nurse in Vancouver) not to.
On the walk, I just walked past a few folks at a distance of three to six feet. Exchanging looks, nods and smiles hidden by the mask. It's an odd thing - but I'm kind of getting used to it now. In the apartment complex, everyone is wearing either a surgical mask or a bandana or cleaning mask. Some wear gloves. We all look at each other and kind of back away a bit to provide distance - it's becoming habit and weirdly expected.
Littered along the gutters and edges of sidewalk and streets, also in the areas around the trees - which have been fenced off with wooden protectors for future gas line construction - are surgical masks and surgical gloves that various folks have thrown away. Why they've thrown them away on the streets - I've no clue. Your guess is as good as mine. Someone on one of the neighborhood social media sites suggested that if we see these gloves and masks, we pick them up and throw them away. But I'm terrified to touch them. Even with gloves and a mask.
The gas line construction that I mentioned above was slated for March but has been cancelled until future notice as non-essential construction. All non-essential construction has been cancelled - such as the electrical re-wiring in various apartments or repairing the ceiling in my apartment. I wish they'd repair the one in the bathroom, which appears to be collecting mold but there is nothing I can do about it. And I'd rather wait than have to deal with workmen in my apartment at this time. It's interesting what they've determined non-essential. The elevator, thank god, is not determined non-essential - mainly because we only have one elevator and its not the best. I'm frankly nervous whenever I enter it. And sort of waiting until the new one is in operation prior to attempting laundry. In addition, the construction contracts that I'm currently managing at crazy workplace are not cancelled - the electric rail yard out on Long Island and the Station Rehabilitation is apparently essential to the State. What is and isn't postponed or put on pause seems to be changing daily.
New York finally flattened the curve. While there are a lot new deaths (which stands to reason - everyone dying has been in the hospital for about a month - or over 14 days) - there aren't a lot of new cases. They have increased testing and added additional sites, because the Governor is a true believer in testing. I never in a million years thought I'd say this - but I thank god for Governor Cuomo every single day. (I ignore all the other leaders.)
The walk wasn't a bad one, saw a few flowers, some trees, got fresh air. I didn't go far - mainly because I'm trying to stay as far from people as possible. The parks, for the most part are still open, but all playgrounds, recreational facilities, etc are closed.
Here's a listing of Facility Closures
All City playgrounds are closed until further notice.
All NYC Parks Recreation Centers are closed to the public until further notice. We will be extending all memberships to our recreation center members to cover the length of time we are closed.
Basketball, handball, and tennis courts will be closed and locked. All basketball court rims and tennis nets will be removed.
Bocce courts and volleyball courts are closed.
Skate parks are closed.
Dog runs are closed until further notice. Our parks remain open to dogs and pet owners to get fresh air and exercise; however, dogs must be kept on a leash according to park rules, and dog owners must keep social distance.
All City nature centers are closed until further notice.
The City's historic houses are closed.
Roger Morris Park, Dyckman Farmhouse Park, and Queens Farm Park are closed.
The Swedish Cottage is closed.
The City's marinas are closed.
The City's kayak launches are closed. Kayak, canoe, and boat launch permits are not available at this time.
As a precaution, the High Line is closed.
The Arsenal Gallery is closed until further notice.
At this time, most concessions are closed, including ice skating rinks, amusement parks and carousels, golf courses, indoor tennis facilities, souvenir shops, and more.
Farmers markets and gas stations remain open. Customers must practice social distancing.
A few snack bars & restaurants remain open for takeout or delivery. Customers must practice social distancing.
For the health and safety of the horses, stables will remain operational, but closed to the general public.
Still wary of the park though - because it's hard to avoid people sometimes, but I may attempt it. Also the people walking around the park and outside, don't always wear masks.
2. I need good cardio exercise. I'm currently flirting with taking Belly Dancing Classes via a friend - where all proceeds go to COVID-19 Charities. It's at 7PM on Fridays and Mondays, also at 3PM on Sundays. I'm not quite sure how it works.
Anyhow, I decided to do it tonight, and tonight's class the donations went to Food Bank of NY. SoI watched her shimmycare# - which is a shimmy workout - and it is a really good workout for the hips, belly, thighs, shoulders and arms. I donated to the Food Bank of NY tonight as well - they are in desperate need of food, and I can help. I want to go out and volunteer and get supplies for folks - but I really can't, so I will donate money. You do what you can, you know? Whatever that may be. After thirty minutes of it, my shoulders really hurt. (I have 2020 shoulders. Starting in 2020, my shoulders and upper arms really began to hurt - I thought it was the new backpack I got for Christmas - it's not. It's tension. They stopped hurting for about three days, after I got a massage on my birthday, March 9th. I'm not crazy about massages, but I was desperate and indicated my needs - the masseuse was perfect. But now they ache again and I'm trying everything.
3. Today, I rented the movie Doctor Dolittle - I do not recommend. It's okay, but my attention wandered a lot during it and I was kind of bored. Very much a kid's movie, and kind of silly in spots. With lots of unrecognizable voices of famous folks, and with Martin Sheen playing the villain and Antonio Banderas playing an irate king. Downy Jr adopted an odd Victorian Accent. It felt Scottish, but I've no real ear.
At any rate, it made me miss the Rex Harrison Original Version, which remains my favorite. It's the musical and it was fun. Everything after it...has been kind of disappointing. My entertainment choices have been disappointing me lately.
4. My church panicked me on supplies again. It keeps sending out informational packages - I don't need this information, I have an overload of information. Information Overload!
Why panic? Because it is hard to get deliveries in NYC. You are competing with millions of people. However, I am getting produce/fruit deliveries every other week from Imperfect Foods. And deliveries for other supplies from Amazon Prime - very glad I stayed a member of Prime. Since Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods is close to impossible to get slots in. Imperfect Foods is cheaper and reduces food waste. Both are going out of their way to help their employees and others. (Unless they are lying to me on their websites.)
So I am fine. Also, if worse comes to worse - I could make a food run to a grocery store nearby, which I'm contemplating in order to get apples. I'm almost out of apples and fruit. Also veggies. I need both.

Date: 2020-04-11 02:13 pm (UTC)This version bombed as well. The only successful one appeared to be the one with Eddie Murphy back in the 1990s, I think, and I didn't like it. At least the Rex Harrison version had songs, and well Rex Harrison who had the uncanny ability of bringing a touch of class to anything he was in. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang had Dick Van Dyke - who had similar ability. Downy Jr - I thought would as well, I was proven wrong.

Date: 2020-04-11 06:04 pm (UTC)I had been curious to watch the Downey version until I read the reviews, which were ghastly. I figure maybe I'll try to watch the Harrison version again sometime.

Date: 2020-04-11 07:00 pm (UTC)I wish I could find the Harrison version. I loved it as a children and loved the songs. I think we had the music to it as well. But like you, no clue if it held up well.
