Day #7 of 30 Day Music Meme - Song to Drive To

Kind of difficult since the last time I drove was roughly in 1999, maybe 2002. Not sure which. I don't drive any longer.

I don't remember what songs I drove to in the 1990s. In the 1980s, we drove to a mixed tape that my brother made me. I can't remember all the songs on it and the tape is long gone (cassettes never lasted long for me, I had a tendency to break them after a while.)

I thought of a lot of songs...Born to be Wild, 56th Street Song, Danger Zone, and a song that I can't find or remember the name of ..

So...here goes my selection...keeping in mind that I don't drive and hate riding in cars. And the last time I was actually in a car - was probably in December of 2019. I've been doing a lot of walking about.

Jonathan Richman isn't going to dazzle you with his vocals. He's the aural equivalent of a baby calf struggling to get on his feet. But he has so much energy, he sounds so innocent and sincere, that he carries you along with him.

A rock and roll classic.

That's a fine choice for driving!

Around town I listen to the classical station. Up in the mountains you can't get much. Near the Four Corners you can get the Navajo language station, broadcasting local artists. Out on the the Great Plains I need some music to stay awake in the middle of the day. I don't much care for Country and Western, but maybe that's why it keeps me awake on those long, long drives to somewhere else!

Yeah, the Great Plains has the worst radio stations. I remember plugging in cassettes when I took long drives in Kansas and Missouri in the 1990s and 80s. My father would hunt down NPR.

Country and Western can be good - but those radio stations don't pick the best tunes.

I don't know, there's not much to sell that song by. The lyrics are even bad. LOL! I listened to it twice...my ears, my ears. Maybe a Simpsons parody would save it? Or a better singer? How did it get produced? The mind boggles. I mean, my college boyfriend sounds better than he does and has written better lesser known songs. And that's saying something.

On Good Morning Starshine? I considered doing the Sesame Street version...I refused to do the Oliver version.

It's a favorite of mine. I saw HAIR done recently in a small theater in Brooklyn. It was back in 2018 - I think or 2017. Excellent production. It's hard to do well.

Yeah, I've heard that version too - I have a lot of Joan Jett. And admittedly a better version. Apparently there's a ton of versions of it.

The appeal of this song is completely lost on me. Also a bit obvious as a driving song.


Commentator: How can anyone not like a song with the word Roadrunner in the title?
Me: Those of us with a modicum of taste? And were rooting for the Coyote, because the Roadrunner was annoying.
