I was out just after sunset tonight, and saw Jupiter and Saturn visually close together. I think it should have been called Lazy Astronomer's Day. It can take some doing to find a planet in the night sky, you have to know what to look for, and the general place to look. Finding two or more in one night is a treat. Jupiter is always quite bright, having Saturn next to it in the same view is fun, but of course not terribly scientifically important. Close together this evening in our view, they are still millions of miles apart.
I could in fact see Saturn's rings with my binoculars, but not having a good steady place to rest them on, it wasn't easy. I could in fact see both Jupiter and Saturn with just my eyes, but it helped having seen them through the binoculars first.
