An appropriate subject heading escapes me...

Wishing Wisewoman/Dub/an Old One - a Happy Birthday!!!

Lots of birthdays today.

The history channel's documentary on the French Revolution is whispering in the background as I type, studying my newly painted nails. Did it myself this round - using the only nail polish I could find. Somewhat unsatisfied with it. My purpose in doing it? To make my nails look presentable - the old nail polish had chipped off and they were looking a tad ragged. The color hides a bit of that. But this color is a bit glitterier and redder than I'd like and isn't quite as clean looking. Why do I need to make them presentable? Have a party to go to tonight on Roosevelt Island - which is basically a bit of land in the East River between Manhattan and Queens that has apartments on it. Friend's birthday party. All these birthday parties this year - makes me wonder if I should do anything for mine? Not sure. Parties take work and I hate bars. Plus my apartment is far too small. Also had a nice one in a fun restaurant last year. What I might just do is buy myself a new CD player - I'd get an MP3 player if I could figure out how to download MP3's from dial-up, since haven't gotten around to getting DSL quite yet. Question? Should I get DSL or the slightly more expensive cable modem? Casey tells me cable modem. People at work suggest DSL. Am on the fence. Will ask Kidbro next weekend about Mp3 players, CD players, and Dsl vs. cable. He's the techie in the family.

What do I want for my birthday? (It's not until March...it's just the fact I have to go out soon and buy stuff that makes me think of this). No clue. Well that's not true - I do know, but it's not anything I can get. Outside the range of possibility of getting. Unless I win the lottery.

A trip to Hawaii. (Never been there outside of the airport)
Tickets to either Wicked or Avenue Q (although wouldn't mind seeing Sondheim's Pacfic Overtures or Mama Mia or Moving Out (the Billy Joel musical), but no one I know would go with me to those.)
A rich chocolat mousse cake or cheesecake or one of those cakes with delicious icing, roses, all the works decorated in grate food colored icing with angel food cake center that would take me three weeks to eat
A Landsend Winter Jacket
New bookshelves and a nightstand
A flat plasma TV with a wide-screen
A TIVO (I lust after that but the practical side of me knows two things: a)I don't need to watch more tv and it's an unnecessary expense, cable is bad enough, b)I have no clue how I'd hook it up. Course could just call Time Warner and get DVR (same thing) and pay $8 more to cable bill - can't afford it. Wouldn't mind getting Premium Cable again either...)
MP3 player and DSL/Cable modem so I can download music
A chocolat martini, A hot fudge sundae, and a gourmet dinner with lamb or a really good steak (although these three things I can definitely do)
A subscription to Netflix and the time to actually watch those DVDs.

If I were to buy DVD's - I think I'd get the following or what I consider the DVD's I lust after, keeping in mind that I'm not a media junkie and am unlikely to ever buy one:
1. Wonderfalls - I wanted to see the entire season
2. BTVS S6 &7, and possibly S4, also Angel S5 (why? Because I adored and am still fond of the Spike character arc which is featured in those seasons. I also strongly identified with Buffy in S6 and S7.)
3. Star Wars Triology - just for the nostalgia factor
4. Farscape - because I missed four episodes.
5. The Miysuki (which I can't spell) triology - Spirited Away, Castle Calistroga, Princess Monokee, Kiki's Delivery Service...
6. The Complete Sopranos - just because I'd like to see the seasons I missed,
same with Six Feet Under and Carnival - series I didn't get to see.

Books? Ah, no compunctions there. I compulsively buy books without thinking.
Always have. And I read just about everything.

Music? Ah - not compulsive. Tend to do it in waves. But since I only really listen when I got to sleep or at work...
1. Donovan's - CD with Season of the Witch on it
2. new Aimee Mann CD
3. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon
4. The Who
5. the soundtrack to Delovey
6. Warren Zevon's greatest hits

But birthday isn't until March. Must get through Feb uglies first. Sun is out today, sky is blue. Life is good.

I would go with you to see "Mamma Mia"! I have a soft spot for ABBA since my mom and I used to listen to them a lot.

Here's a virtual pre-birthday cheesecake!

Hee, if you ever make it to NYC ATPO meet, maybe you sneak out from
the airport hotel gathering and come with me to see Mama Mia.

What is this "if" you speak of? Ptui, we will not speak of it again!

(barring, of course, a complete "proving my actual gender" breakdown ;) )

I just checked my birthday list to see if I had been delinquent (wasn't, whew) and realized you and my mom share a birthday. Yet another member of my flist that shares a birthday with a family member of mine.

Aren't wish lists nice? I have a ongoing and mostly unpublished wishlist. Even if you can never afford the stuff, it is nice to dream. These lists allow that. I don't get frustrated by the lack of ability to buy these things, mostly, but wishing is dreaming, and dreaming is very satisfying. What dreaming allows, is better than stuff anyway!

Here is some more cheesecake.

Pacific Overtures?

Is there a revival of that right now? I'd love to go to that with you! Of course, I'm now a student and can't really justify Broadway tickets, but as a wish list I'm right there with ya!

Yes, assuming it hasn't closed yet - it's playing at the old Studio 54, where Cabret used to be and stars BD Wong in the lead.

Of course you should do something for your birthday! What you did last year (w/a bunch of us!) was fun, wasn't it? We can't miss your birthday, just like we'd never miss cjl's, or mine, or...um...wait a minute. We did miss those--aw, I'm not gonna see any of you guys till July 4th weekend, am i? >sniffle< Well, I'll just have to save the birthday presents till then. I've got something in mind for you that's not on your list, 'kat...of course, the other list I need to see is what you've got already!

And let's have a local meet, OK? Doesn't have to be for your birthday, but sometime soon....

Way too long a list - book wise. DVD wise, easy:
Firefly, BTVS S5, Unbreakable, The Ed Sullivan Show signed by Davey Jones, and A Muppet Christmas. ( I didn't buy any of them - people gave them to me.)Like I said - not a media junkie.

Music wise - again too long to really list at the moment. Kidbro is the only one I know who does well in that dept -for reasons I don't completely understand. Every CD he's given me has been perfect and not one I've seen or heard before, but when I get them I play them over and over and over again: Beck, David Bowie - Slow, Lush, Bjork,
Lobi Traore, The Virigin Suicides Soundtrack,
Elliot Smith...the boy just gets my music taste, which again is bizarre. He did the same thing when I was in college - making me mixed tapes that I adored - one had Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd's Animals, Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World, and Kate Bush. Also got me a hip hop version of Killing Me Softly that was amazing.
He introduced me to Pink Floyd, The Who, Kate Bush, PEter Gabriel, Bjork, David Bowie. Not sure why - but he seems to know what I like in music better than I do. Only thing he gets perfectly.
Very weird. And he's the only one I've met who gets it. Maybe because when it comes to music he has ecletic tastes as well - we both pretty much like everything but are weirdly picky at the same time.

that's all i need to know

The item I have in mind is not on your list. Now, as long as you don't happen to acquire it in the next month & a half or so....

Aw, thanks to much, s'kat! That's sweet. I'm having a great day so far and of course the birthday will be continued with dinner at a friend's place tomorrow and then Monday and Tuesday with my folks on Vancouver Island.

;o)
