You can even go further back than the 1920s, to the 1800s, with various folks like Oscar Wild, and others who tried to stand up for their rights. The fight for human rights goes back to the Biblical Times though. I mean that's basically the main point of Exodus, and the Jesus story. Jesus was a radical socialist attempting to obtain systematic reform. (I find that fact so incredibly ironic, since a lot of Fundamentalist Christians are espousing the exact opposite view and values that Jesus and the early Christians valued. If they were to be transported back in time - they'd be the Romans.)
